The name was coined by combining two Greek words µέθυ (methy) “wine” & ὕλη (yle) “wood.” by two French chemists Jean Baptiste André Dumas (1800-84) & Eugène-Melchior Péligot (1811-90). In their essay Ann de Chimie et de physique, they explain its etymological meaning as “wine or spirits of wood (vin ou liqueur spiritueuse du bois.”)
