今日では、否定語とともに、

In the mid 16th century, the word brook got the current sense “to tolerate or allow,” which was a figurative use of an earlier sense “to digest.” In Old English, brúcan means “to hold or use,” which derives from Proto-Germanic *bruk- “to enjoy or make use of,” which stems from Proto-Indo-European  *bhrug- “to enjoy; fruit.” Brook is cognate with the Romance word fruit.
