Brown as a berry ---
「実のように茶色い」とは
「よく日焼けしている」こと。
　He was as brown as a berry
　and spent all day sunning himself
　on the deck.
　彼はよく日焼けしていて、
　一日中デッキで日光浴をして
　過ごしていた。

初出は中英語期に記された
チョーサー作の『カンタベリー物語』。
馬のことを表現するのにも用いているから、
「日焼けしている」ことだけではなく、
動物を指すときは　
　「茶色の毛並みの」
の意味になる。

Berry は古英語では
　ぶどう (grape)
を指すことか多く、また、
Brown は「暗い (色の)」の
意味であったから、
Brown as a berry は

「ぶどうのように黒い」が
原義なのかもしれない。
