Big Apple

Big Apple

Big Apple ---

Big Apple

[1920s. John J. FitzGerald, a reporter for the Morning Telegraph, claimed that he had heard this phrase used by Black stable-hands in New Orleans to refer to the  “city’s racetracks.” In 1930s, Black jazz musicians called Harlem or the New York City the “Big Apple,” or simply, the “Apple,” as the capital of jazz. This nickname, then, was forgotten for some decades, but it came back in 1971, when the President of the New York Convention & Visitor Bureau Charles Gillett made promotion.]
