puma

ピューマ (puma) は南米のネコ科の動物。語源はケチュア語で、スペイン語を経て、英語と日本語になった。 OED が採録している用例文を見てみると、一八九八年にルミス (C. F. Lummis) という人が、-----  The proper name of the American lion today is Puma; and that is an Inca word that Pizarro found in the Fifteen-thirties among the Andes... its Peruvian name by now is accepted, not only in all Spanish countries, but wherever English is spoken… ----- 「今日、アメリカ大陸のライオンの正式名称はピューマであり、それはピサロが一五三〇年代にアンデス山中で見つけたインカの言葉である。(略) そのペルー先住民語は今ではスペイン語圏の国々のみならず、英語が話されているところでも受け入れられている」と書き残している。

　ダーウィン (Charles Darwin) は ----- the meat is very white, and remarkably like veal in taste...「その肉は真っ白で、味においては子牛によく似ている」と書いている。

　ピューマの別名はクーガー (cougar) である。
