Give Sorrow Words

Sorrow is more or less personified in English literary works occasionally. At Act 4 Scene 3 in Macbeth by Shakespeare, Ross reports to Macduff: “Your castle is surprised; your wife and babes / Savagely slaughter'd.” Duncan’s son, Prince of Scotland Malcolm, hearing it beside them, sympathizes with his friend Macduff & says to him:

MALCOLM
Give sorrow words: the grief that does not speak
Whispers the o'er-fraught heart and bids it break.

悲しみは英文学では、程度に差はあるけれども、しばしば擬人化される。シェイクスピア作の『マクベス』第四幕第三場で、ロスはマクダフに伝える。「お城は急襲され、奥方とお子様はむごたらしく虐殺されました。」　ダンカンの息子、スコットランド王子のマルコムは、その報告を傍らで聞いて、友のマクダフに同情して言う。

おさまりきれない胸の内を囁き出すと、胸は張り裂けてしまうから。
