Natural Touch

The word touch in an archaic usage means “quality, trait, kind, purity.” This sense derives from the process of testing the quality of gold or silver by rubbing it on a touchstone.  Touch is used in the sense "quality of man" at Act 4 Scene 2 in Macbeth by Shakespeare. Lady Macduff tells Ross that she doubts her husband’s love & wisdom:

ROSS 

You know not

Whether it was his wisdom or his fear.

LADY MACDUFF 

Wisdom! to leave his wife, to leave his babes,

His mansion and his titles in a place

From whence himself does fly? He loves us not;

He wants the natural touch: for the poor wren,

The most diminutive of birds, will fight,

Her young ones in her nest, against the owl.

単語 touch は古い用法で「質、特徴、種、純度」を意味する。この意義は試金石 (タッチストーン) にこすりつけて金や銀の品質を割り出す作業に由来している。シェイクスピアの『マクベス』第四幕第二場で、 touch は「人としての質、(本来そなわっているはずの) 人情」の意味で使われている。マクダフ夫人は夫の愛情と判断力に疑いを持っている旨をロスに語っている。
