瞳

日本語では「目に入れても痛くない」くらいにかわいいといった言い方をする。もちろん、大切にしたい人は「目に入れても痛くない」のである。

　アラブ人は大切な人を「わたしの瞳」と表現する。時には、妹が姉にいうこともある (バートン版千夜一夜の第十七夜)。

　英語では、「瞳」も「児童、生徒」も pupil という。両方の意味において語源は究極的には同じであり、印欧祖語語根「(哺乳動物の) 乳頭、乳首」からできている。「生徒、児童」の意味の pupil はラテン語の男性形名詞からで、「瞳、瞳孔」は女性形名詞から。瞳を覗き込むと覗いた人の姿が瞳に反映されて「小さな人形」または「ちっちゃな女の子」に見えることから、命名されている。ただ、英語では大切な人を pupil とは言わない。

　pupil 「瞳、瞳孔」を指す英語の言い回しに apple of the eye 「目の実 or りんご」があり、この表現では比喩的に「大切なもの (者 or 物)」を指すことがある。apple of the eye には九世紀の初出例がある。英語はアラビア語と同様に、目に入れても痛くないものではなく、瞳そのものだから大切なのだと表現していることになる。
