Muso is a slang term born in Australia in 1967, which refers to a musician, especially a classical one. Mus- is an abbreviation for musician & -o is a suffix that makes a humorous ( sometimes derogatory ) colloquial expression functioning -er or -or:

　garbo = garbage collector
　journo = journalist
　lezzo = lesbian
　smoko = smoker
　speedo = speedmeter
　vego = vegetarian
　wino = alchoholic (especially, cheap wine drinker)

　In the UK, first recorded in 1977, it also means a "music enthusiast."

Muso (ミューゾウ) は、一九六七年にオーストラリアで生まれた俗語であり、ミュージシャン、特にクラシックの演奏家のことを指す。

　Mus- は musician の略語であり、接尾辞 -o は -er あるいは -or の働きをする滑稽な (時に蔑視的な) 口語的表現を作る接尾辞である。
　英国での初出は一九七七年で「音楽愛好家、音楽バカ」の意味でもある。

In Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha, written by Cerevantes (translated into English by Charles Jarvis, 1858), there is a scene using this word:

"The book in Italian, sir," answered the author, "is called Le Bagatelle." "And what answers to Bagatelle in our language?" said Don Quixote. "Le Bagatelle," said the author, "signifies trifles; but though its title promises little, it contains much good and substantial matter."

　Bagatelle, of Romance origin, has a few senses that seem unconnected each other:
　1. a trifle.
　2. a game in which balls are struck to send them to holes.
　3. a short piece (especially for piano.)
　Etymologists say that the word is possibly made of Latin baca or bacca "berry, round fruit, olive, pearl."

　セルバンテス作『ドン・キホーテ』にこの言葉が出てくるシーンがある。

　「旦那様、このイタリア語の本は」と著者は答えた。「Le Bagatelleと題しました」
　「してそれは我らの言葉でいうとなんですかな」とドン・キホーテは言った。

　ロマンス語由来の bagatelle は一見互いに関係なさそうないくつかの語義を有している。
　1. つまらないもの。
　2. ボールを叩いて飛ばして穴に入れるゲームの一種。
　3. 小品 (特にピアノ曲)。
　Bagatelle は「水分の多い果実、丸い果実、オリーブ、真珠」を意味するラテン語の baca (bacca) から作られたのだろうと語源学者は説明している。
