ablaut

--- WORD DNA -------
Abluat is a vowel change in related words (eg. lie - lay).

< ETYMOLOGY >
[19th c. from German; ab- "off" & Laut "sound." The technical term was coined by Jacob Grimm, 1819. Laud is related to loud. See also umlaut.]

< Decipherment in Japanese >
[外音] 「母音交換、母音階梯」
------------------------------

 単語の文法機能を決める「母音交換」のこと (eg. sing - sang - sung - song)。アプラウトは遺伝であり、親言語から子言語へと綿々と受け継がれている。sing は印欧祖語 *sengwh- 「歌う、呪文を唱える (to sing or make an incantation)」から発しているが、母音が -o- になると *songwho- で名詞となり、「歌、歌うこと (song)」の意味になる。(印欧祖語の gwh- は呼気を吐きながら唇を突き出す有声子音 g の音)
 アプラウトは動詞の時制の変化に対応している (eat - ate / drive - drove / take - took / give - gave) ものもあれば、品詞の相違に対応している (drink - drunkard / food - feed "to give food or eat" / long - length) ものもある。
 印欧祖語においては、O階梯 (O-grade / PIE *sengwh- のO階梯形は *songwho-)、ゼロ階梯 (zero-grade)、長音階梯 (lengthened grade) 等々が想定されている。
 ゼロ階梯形は、*es- "to be" の場合、*s- であり、この再建の根拠となっている語群は、梵語 asmi "I am" vs santi- "they are"、ゴート語 im vs sind、古教会スラブ語 esmi vs sotu などである。

akimbo

--- WORD DNA -------
Akimbo means "with (hands on hips and) ellbows turned outwards." and is used postpositively.

< Etymology >
[Middle English "in a sharp curve"; of unknown origin. Some claim that akimbo derives from Old Norse.]
----------------------------

 「(手を腰 (ie. 尻の上の方) にあてて) 曲げた肘を体の外側へと突き出して」いる状態。中英語では「鋭く曲がっている」状態を示していたが、それ以前は不詳。一説には古ノルド語から来たとされている。この説の裏付けとなるようなアイスランド語の同系語と目されるものも提示されている。また、「曲がる (to bow)」と同系とする説もある。
 この単語は名詞に後付けされる後置詞として用いられている。

The arms akimbo was often a sign of pride.
腰に両手をあてて両肘を突き出すのは大概自尊心のあらわれであった。

People may show defiance, anger, or frustration by standing akimbo.
人は腰に両手をあてる姿勢をとって、抵抗、怒り、あるいは、不満を示すのだろう。

benji

 アメリカの俗語で「百ドル札」のこと。百ドル札の愛称「ベンジャミン」から。ベンジはベンジャミンの愛称で、百ドル札の肖像画がベンジャミン・フランクリン (Benjamin Franklin) であることに由来している。
What size mattress did you get for six benjies?
六百ドル払って手に入れたマットレスの大きさはどれくらいですか。
百ドル札の発行がはじまったのは一九一四年からである。

benji
[20th c. American-English slang, made up of the nickname for benjamin "100 US dollar bill"; benjamin and benji are sometimes spelt with the capital initial. Benji is also used for the nickname of the male forename Benjamin. So called because the portrait of Benjamin Franklin is depicted on the 100 dollar bill (first issued, 1914.)]

grok

Merriam-Webster 配信の Word of the Day によると、「GROK は火星語に由来する唯一の英単語であろう」とのことである。ヴァレンタイン・マイケル・スミスは火星で育って、大人になってから地球に移住してきたが、その言葉の一つ grok は一九六〇年代からアメリカの若者のヴォキャブラリーになっていった。火星人スミスについては、ハインライン著の『異星の客』に記されている。
 意味は「深く (きちんと) 理解する、把握する、悟る」こと。

He wouldn't grok that you were joking.
彼は君にからかわれたんだなんて気づいちゃいないだろうね。

Browsers can easily grok your code.
ブラウザはその (ie. あなたの) コードを容易に把握します。

There are a lot of people who grok the XML thing.
XMLモノが何であるのかを知っている人は大勢いる。

grok
[20th c., from Martian (?) "to perceive, understand profoundly." According to Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day (Feb 16, 2007), "Grok may be the only English word that derives from Martian." The word entered the vocablary of the young in America, 1960s. Robert A. Heinlein REPORTS in Stranger in a Strange Land (1961) about Valentine Michael Smith who comes from Mars and speaks Martian on Earth... (or on the pages of the book only?) Earthlings learned, or learn, grok from him.]

shark (2)

 初出は十六世紀末。動詞は名詞よりも文献初出がやや早く「がつがつ喰らう」ことを指す。名詞は「がつがつ喰らう人、ろくでなし、穀潰し」で、ドイツ語からの借用。「かき集める」は『ハムレット (Hamlet)』一幕一場に用例がある。
Horatio
... young Fortinbras...
Hath in the skirts of Norway here and there
Sharked up a list of lawless resolutes...
若きフォーティンブラスは・・・
ノルウェーの各地方のあちこちで、
無法者の荒くれどもの軍勢をかき集めたのだ。

 現代では脚注なしにシェークスピアの動詞用法はわからなくなっている。つまり、上記のような用法は廃用である。

 この単語はアメリカに渡った後、「達人、やり手」の意味になった。

What did she pay the poker shark?
彼女がポーカーの達人に支払ったものとは?

Maybe he's an incredibly talented pool shark.
まあ、あいつは突拍子もない才能をもったビリアードの達人ってことかな。

 一説によると、海を泳ぐ「シャーク」と同源である。

shark
[16th c., borrowed from German Schurke "scoundrel," meaning a "one who preys on others" (first written, 1599) or, in the verb use, "to gather hastily; to practice trickery; to snaek." Now, the word shark has an American slang sense "one who is good at a specified field; master, specialist." Some say this word is etymologically related to shark "any of various marine cartilaginous fishes." ]

shark

海に棲息する軟骨性の魚 (any of various marine cartilaginous fishes)、即ち、鮫のこと。
Sharks have no bones. A shark's skeleton is made up of cartilage.
鮫には骨がない。鮫の骨格は軟骨でできている。

The average life span of a shark is 25 years, but some sharks can live to be 100.
鮫の平均寿命は二十五年であるが、中には百歳まで生きるものもいる。

New teeth are constantly being formed in rows in a shark's jaw. Shark's teeth are normally replaced every eight days.
鮫の口の中では新しい歯が列をなして次々に形成されている。鮫の歯は通常八日周期で生え替わる。

A diver escaped a 10-foot shark attack.
ダイバーは十フィート (三メートル) の鮫の攻撃から逃げた。

How would you cut a shark in half?
With a sea-saw.
どうやって鮫を真っ二つに切りますか。
シーソー (seasaw = 海のノコギリ) を使って。

 語源は不明。鮫はヴァイキングが食していたことが知られているが、ゲルマン諸語に同系語はない。

 Norwegian: hai
 Swedish: haj
 Danish: haj
 Icelandic: hakarl
 German: Hai
 Dutch: haai

 上のリストを見るかぎり英語だけが異質である。では、語源的には数系統あると思われるロマンス諸語から来たのかというとそうでもない。

 French: requin
 Romanian: rechin
 (上記二語は同源であろう)

 Italian: squalo

 Spanish: tiburon

shark
[16th c., probably first written on a handbill advertising an exhibition of the specimen (1569): "There is no proper name for it that I knowe, but that sertayne men of Captayne Haukinses doth call it a 'sharke' ." The origin is unknown, but some etymologists explain that this word is related to another shark (See shark 2).]

zaibatsu

The military men were hostile to the zaibatsu which dominated the economy.
軍は経済を支配する財閥に敵対していた。

In the meantime, zaibatsu firms came to the fore, and eventually the military-zaibatsu coalition led the country into a catastrophic war.
この時代に財閥が頭角を現し、その結果的として、軍と財閥が衝突、国に悲惨な戦争をもたらした。

However, the split zaibatsu firms regrouped themselves into a new form of business groups, called keiretsu, without zaibatsu families.
それでも、ちりぢりにされた財閥企業群は、同族支配をやめて、系列と呼ばれる新たなビジネス集団を再編成した。

 韓国には系列に類似する企業集団があり、それを"チェボル" (財閥) という。

The zaibatsu and the chaebol are both family-owned and family-managed.
財閥とチェボル (財閥) は共に一族によって所有され、一族によって経営されている。

zaibatsu
[20th c., borrowed from Japanese, compound formed by zai (財) "wealth, business, finance, money" & batsu (閥) "clan, clique"; both characters come from Chinese. Akin to Korean chaebol (財閥).]

Pluto

On February 18, 1930, Tombaugh discovered planet nine, later named Pluto.

A "planet" is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, and (c) has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.

The eight "planets" are: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
「惑星」とは、(a) 太陽周回軌道上にあり、(b) それ自体の重力が個体にかかる諸力を圧倒するのに十分な質量を有していて重力平衡 (ほとんど球) 体を保ち、(c) 軌道上付近の細かな物体を一掃した天体のことである。
(脚注)
「惑星」は、水星、金星、地球、火星、木星、土星、天王星、海王星の八つである。

A "dwarf planet" is a celestial body that (a) is in orbit around the Sun, (b) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, (c) has not cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, and (d) is not a satellite.

Pluto
[Middle English, borrowed from Latin, borrowed from Greek Plouton (Ploutodotes) "giver of riches", made up of ploutos "wealth, riches" (originally, "overflowing"), from Proto-Indo-European *pleu- "to flow". The first usage in English is the name for the god of the underworld in Greek and Roman mythology. At the beginning of the 20th c., American astronomer Percival Lowell made calculations where an unseen "ninth planet" might be, and, with his colleagues, made telescope sweeps of that area, but they couldn't find it until his death, 1916. Lowell's successors installed a new telescope in Flagstaff, Arizona, and appointed Clyde Tombaugh to continue the search. In 1930, his team found the "ninth planet" and it was named after the initials of Percival Lowell and the Roman god as the lord of darkness (Pluto was considered the furthest planet from the sun at that time) and giver of wealth. In 2006, the General Assembly of International Astronomical Union established the definition of a planet that didn't categorize Pluto as a planet. They classified it as a dwarf planet, which was the new technical term coined then. After that, the verb pluto appeared in American English which means "to devaluate (someone or something)".
